What a pool cover pump does
Draining water off the cover
Rain and melt water collect on a solid or safety pool cover. The weight of that water can stress the cover and its anchors, so a small submersible pump sits on the cover and pushes the water away through a discharge hose.
A different job from circulation
A cover pump moves surface water off the cover. It does not circulate or filter the pool, which is the work of the circulation pump and the filter. A pool with a cover often needs both. We supply the pump, not the cover.
Submersible and automatic cover pump types
Submersible, manual
A submersible pump with an on and off switch at the power supply. Simple, but someone has to switch it on and watch the water level.
Automatic, float switch
A float switch starts the pump when the water rises and stops it when the water falls. This suits unattended covers in rain or melt.
Automatic, sensor
A sensor detects the water instead of a moving float. Sensors are less likely to snag on leaves or folds in the cover.
Low-water cut-off
Cover pumps run in a thin layer of water. Pumps differ in how low they can pump down before they stop, so state the water depth you want to clear.
Flow, head, hose and materials
Flow and head
Head is small: it is the lift from the cover to the hose outlet, plus hose friction. Longer or narrower hose cuts flow. State the discharge distance and height on the RFQ.
Debris and the intake
Leaves and grit reach the intake on a cover. A fine intake screen protects the impeller; a coarse one passes more debris. The pump should be easy to lift and clean.
Materials and cold weather
Housings are usually thermoplastic. The pump may sit in cold water or on ice, so say your lowest temperature. A pump should not be left running on a frozen cover.
Power supply and cord
Voltage, frequency, plug type and cord length for the destination market, kept clear of the water. Follow local electrical rules for outdoor use.
