What a pool filter does
Cleaning the circulating water
The circulation pump pushes pool water through the filter, which traps suspended particles before the water returns to the pool. A strainer basket on the pump suction catches leaves and larger debris first, so the filter only sees fine particles. See the pool pump page for the pump side.
Why the filter and pump must be matched
The pump can only deliver flow the filter will pass. A filter that is too small for the pump raises pressure and lowers flow. A filter that is oversized for the pump works but is bigger and costlier than it needs to be.
Cartridge, sand and DE pool filter types
Cartridge
A pleated element traps particles on its surface and is cleaned by removing and rinsing it. It has a large surface area, so it handles a given flow at low pressure drop, and there is no backwash water to dispose of.
Sand
Water passes down through a bed of graded sand in a tank. Cleaning is done by backwashing, which reverses the flow through a multiport valve. It is simple and tolerant of dirt, but it filters to a coarser particle size than cartridge or DE.
Diatomaceous earth (DE)
A fine powder coats grids or fingers inside the tank and traps very small particles. It filters finest of the three, but needs the powder recharged after each backwash and careful handling of the used media.
Choosing between them
Cartridge suits low maintenance effort and no backwash water. Sand suits simple, robust duty. DE suits the finest filtration and the most upkeep. Your market, local rules on backwash discharge and water quality target decide the choice.
Flow rating, pressure drop and tank construction
Flow rating against pump duty
Filters are rated for a maximum flow. Keep the pump flow at the duty point at or below that rating, in GPM or m³/h, with margin. Running a filter above its rating forces water through faster and cuts filtering quality.
Pressure drop
A clean filter adds a small pressure drop and a dirty one adds more. The pressure gauge reading rises as the media loads, and that rise is the usual signal to clean. Include the dirty-filter head in the pump duty.
Tank, valve and fittings
Tanks are commonly molded polymer or glass-reinforced plastic, with a pressure rating stated for the tank. Sand and DE filters add a multiport valve. Connection size and type should match the pump and the plumbing.
Materials and water type
Parts in contact with chlorinated or salt water need corrosion-resistant materials, and metal fittings need protection. Confirm exact materials on the RFQ rather than relying on a general claim.
Maintenance and the strainer basket
Strainer basket
Empty it regularly. A full basket starves the pump of water and reduces flow through the whole system.
Cartridge upkeep
Remove and rinse the element when pressure rises. Elements wear out and are replaced as a spare part.
Backwash for sand and DE
Backwash when the gauge rises, then rinse. DE also needs fresh powder added after backwash.

Do you sell pool filters to consumers?
No. This is OEM and wholesale supply for brands, distributors and installers. There is no cart and no public price. Send a duty sheet on the inquiry form.
What is the difference between cartridge, sand and DE pool filters?
Cartridge filters trap particles on a pleated element that is rinsed clean. Sand filters use a bed of sand that is backwashed. DE filters use a fine powder coating and filter the finest, with the most upkeep.
How do I match a pool filter to a pump?
Keep the pump flow at the duty point at or below the filter's rated flow, and include the pressure drop of a dirty filter in the pump head. The pool pump page explains how to size the pump.
How often does a filter need cleaning?
Clean when the pressure gauge reads noticeably above its clean-filter value. How often depends on pool use, debris and water chemistry, so there is no single interval.
Can you private-label a pool filter or supply it wholesale?
