What a pool pump does
Circulation through the filter
A pool pump draws water from the skimmer and main drain, pushes it through the filter and heater or sanitizer, and returns it to the pool. Moving water through the filter is what keeps it clear. A strainer basket ahead of the impeller catches leaves and debris.
Turnover
Turnover is the time the pump needs to circulate the whole pool volume once through the filter. Required turnover is often set by local rules and pool use, so the flow you specify follows from pool volume and the turnover target. Add the head loss of the filter, valves and plumbing when you choose the duty point.
Swimming pool pump types in plain buyer language
Single-speed
One fixed motor speed. Simple and low cost to build, which is why it is common on entry-level lines. It runs at full speed whenever it is on.
Dual-speed
A high speed for filtering and cleaning and a low speed for routine circulation. The lower speed uses less power for the same running hours.
Variable-speed
The drive sets motor speed to match the job. Because power falls steeply as speed drops, running slower for longer is the usual way to cut energy use. It needs a drive and controls, so it costs more to build.
Above-ground and in-ground
Above-ground pools usually pair with smaller pumps and lower head. In-ground pools usually have larger plumbing and more head, so they use bigger pumps. Say which on the RFQ.
Self-priming centrifugal with strainer basket
Most pool pumps are self-priming centrifugal pumps with a strainer basket on the suction side. Self-priming lets the pump restart after the water level drops, as long as the housing holds water. For general water transfer, see the transfer pump line.
Selecting by flow, head, motor and voltage
Flow and head
State flow in gallons per minute or m³/h at the head you expect. A pump rated at one point in a catalog gives less flow when the filter is dirty or the plumbing is long.
Motor and voltage
Single-phase motors are the norm. Common supplies are 110 V and 220-240 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. A motor on 50 Hz turns slower than on 60 Hz, so the flow and head curve changes with the supply. Give the destination market.
Wet-end materials
Housings are commonly glass-filled polypropylene or ABS. The shaft seal is the part most exposed to chlorinated or salt water, so it should be a corrosion-resistant type. Metal parts in contact with water need corrosion protection. Resistance to saltwater and chlorine depends on the exact materials, so confirm them on the RFQ.
Noise and efficiency
Motor type, impeller design and operating speed all affect noise and power use. Slower running is generally quieter. The pump works against the filter, so match it to a pool filter rated for the same flow. A pool heater adds head and needs a minimum flow, and a cover pump handles water on the cover.

What is the difference between single-speed, dual-speed and variable-speed?
Single-speed runs at one speed. Dual-speed has a high and a low speed. Variable-speed lets a drive set the speed, which suits long, slow circulation and lower energy use but costs more to build.
How do I size a swimming pool pump?
Start from pool volume and the turnover target to get flow, then add the head loss of the filter, valves and pipe runs. Pick a pump whose curve covers that duty point. Send these figures on the RFQ.
Can you build a swimming pool pump to our voltage and plug?
Yes, within the motor and plug options we can quote. Give voltage, frequency, plug type and cord length for the destination market.
Which materials suit salt or chlorinated water?
Glass-filled polypropylene or ABS housings and a corrosion-resistant shaft seal are the usual choices. Final materials depend on your water type, so confirm them on the RFQ.
Which pool filter should go with the pump?
Match the filter's rated flow to the pump's flow at the duty point, and check the pressure drop across a dirty filter. Cartridge, sand and DE types are compared on the pool filter page.
Can the pump be private-labelled and supplied wholesale?
