A utility pump is the small electric class brands and distributors put on the shelf for everyday water work: draining a flooded basement, emptying a tank, hot tub or pond, moving rainwater after a storm, watering from a barrel, or lifting water off a pool cover. This page is OEM and wholesale supply for that class — duty-sheet quotes, private label and carton lots — not a retail cart. The fluid is clear to slightly dirty water, not heavy solids. Submersible and portable styles
Submersible utility
The pump sits in the water and pushes it out through a hose. There is no priming. It cannot drain to the last millimetre, because the intake sits above the floor, so ask for the residual water level you need.
Portable, dry-mounted
A small self-priming or centrifugal pump stays outside the water with a suction hose. It suits ponds, tanks and barrels. Our transfer line lists self-priming and drainage SKUs.
Hose and fittings
State the hose connection: thread type and size or a quick-connect. Use a hose that will not collapse on suction, and avoid kinks and long runs on a small pump.
Garden and pond
For garden and pond use, protect the pump from debris and algae with a screen. Use a pump rated for continuous use if it will run for hours.
Solids limit, floats and thermal protection
Solids limit
It passes only small particles such as grit and fine sediment. Leaves, string and mud block it. Say what is in the water and use the intake screen provided.
Float switch
A float starts the pump when the level rises and stops it when the level falls. A vertical float suits a narrow pit; a tethered float needs space to swing. Manual and automatic modes are common.
Thermal protection
A thermal cut-out in the motor stops it when it overheats from running dry or a blocked intake, and restarts it when cool. It protects the winding but is not a reason to run dry.
Materials and cable
Thermoplastic housings are light and resist corrosion. Stainless steel and cast iron give more durability. Give the cable length to the socket and use a ground-fault circuit breaker where the supply allows.

Utility pump vs trash pump?
A utility pump handles clear to slightly dirty water with fine grit. A trash pump is built for muddy site water with leaves, twigs and small stones and a much larger free passage. If the water looks like construction slurry, start on the trash page.
Can a utility pump handle flood or storm water?
Yes for clear to lightly dirty rainwater in a basement, tank or yard. Muddy flood or storm water with leaves, twigs and grit needs a trash pump instead.
Utility pump vs sump pump?
Retail “sump pump” usually means a float-controlled pump in a basement pit for groundwater. We do not have a dedicated /sump-pump/ page. What can a utility pump handle?
Clear to slightly dirty water with small particles. Leaves, mud and fibers need a trash pump or a sewage pump.
Why will it not drain the last of the water?
Submersible intakes sit above the floor, so a thin layer remains. Ask for the residual level you need, or mop or use a flat-suction model for the last film.
Why does it stop and start on its own?
A thermal cut-out may be tripping from a blocked intake, a kinked hose or running dry. Clear the screen, check the hose and the water level.
Which catalog pumps are closest?
The submersible drainage and self-priming pumps on the transfer line. Neither is a small consumer drain pump.
